Today we continue our series of meeting the speakers who will be joining us at WPE ‘09 next week. Today we are pleased to welcome Fiona McClurg-Welland of Style 2 You.

Fiona has worked closely with Sandy Moretta our membership director over the last few years. When we said we wanted someone to invigorate planners with their confidence and image Sandy said Fiona was just the person!

With over fifteen years experience in retail management, sales and customer service roles, Fiona understands the importance of first and lasting impressions. Using the psychology of colour, she teachers her clients not just which tones of colours and shapes of clothes suit them best, but also to make informed choices which will positively influence the way others relate to them. Her passion for the subject is reflected in her own unique style and positive, enthusiastic and inspirational personality. Fiona’s primary objective is to make a positive contribution to the wellbeing and success of others, by helping them maximise their potential.

She has been featured in regional magazines and newspapers, and has been an ‘Ask the Expert’ guest on various local and regional radio shows. Wedding Planning Excellence: 10 days to go

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of engineering your website to show up in search engine results, under certain relevant ‘key words’ e.g. wedding planner, wedding coordinator. SEO can increase the volume and quality of traffic to your website and is increasingly important in today’s technological age. At WPE ‘09 we will be welcoming Steve Mark of Kayem Web Design to talk about this crucial topic.

152952Steve has been working in website design and development for over 12 years. In this time he has amassed a vast amount of knowledge concerning taking an initial design idea through to the final site and beyond. Not content with merely designing websites, Steve also assists his clients in promoting their sites to a wider audience via his work in SEO; a skill he has honed over the years to the benefit of his clients.

Steve is a member of BNI and attends various other networking events and alongside using the internet to promote business, Steve is a fierce advocate of networking in order to advance your business.

Outside of business Steve is a keen performer of amateur dramatics and last year during a performance of Summer Holiday was required to dress up as a woman, something he is pleased to point out happens as rarely as a comet! Steve is also dad to Kirsten and they are often heard doing battle over Playstation game SingStar, with Steve very often coming second to his daughter’s superior vocal talent. Steve’s party trick is being able to rap the entire version of Vanilla Ice’s hit ‘Ice, Ice Baby’.

We’re really looking forward to meeting Steve and hearing more about his amateurs dramatic career!

Showcase Wedding: The Bespoke Wedding Company

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Today we begin our series of showcase weddings from members of the UKAWP. Today’s showcase is from director Kelly Chandler of The Bespoke Wedding Company and features an extraordinary wedding which took place in London last year.

“I knew that we had an exciting challenge on our hands as soon as we met the bride to be in spring 2007 and she shared her vision for a day that was so different and so un-wedding like, that it would be remembered forever. She commented that she was the last of a number of friends to be married and didn’t want to have to compete by doing something similar. So the idea was set that the wedding celebration would be a very personal and unique party (they had legally married the previous summer but not been able to share with all their friends and family).

It was important that elements of the couple’s joint and separate heritage was injected into the day and also that it was a celebration of places that they just loved during their various travels. So was born a multi-themed event that ‘took place’ in Russia, Morocco, Asia and Italy as well as more than a dash of America and the UK! We played about with the timings too and everything took place between 11am and 7pm to allow families to fully enjoy.

It was clear from the start that lots of theming was needed and many separate areas required and that we had to find a different location that would never have been used for a wedding before. I started to work on many options and came across a very large event space by the name of SEOne London, a nightclub and party venue which quickly became the absolutely perfect space for the event.

Then the work really begun; transforming a very large venue, typically used for late night clubbers and not elegant wedding guests, built directly underneath London Bridge. It certainly was a team effort as we hired a draping/dressing company, arranged carpeting, heating, lighting and sound technicians, furniture companies, not to mention the usual caterers, florists and entertainment.

As guests arrived, flaming torches marked the way into Russia. Fully decked out in red draping with hammer and sickle emblems, amber lighting and projections of Russian Bears onto the walls, it was very much the real thing. A hammer and sickle ice sculpture was in place as a Gorbachev look-a-like mingled with guests and the caterers served blinis, caviar and Bloody Marys. Guests were invited to sign a guest book and view photos mounted onto boards of the couple’s actual wedding day. As this was a family occasion there were some 40 children attending so we purpose built a light, bright crèche zone for them, decked out with balloons and rainbow lighting;  the Artful Splodgers team came in and installed all range of toys, games and party fun to make sure that the young ones enjoyed to the max and were well taken care of by their team.

As guests made their way through to lunch, they were greeted by an elegant reception room; this was probably the most conventional part of the day where the couple actually wanted an almost traditional white marquee effect and a clean, stylish dining setting; so we built a marquee inside the brick built nightclub area. White was the backdrop with some black detailing and a stunning purple wash set off the dramatic floral centerpieces, pink phaelanopsis place setting flowers and stationery. Guests were invited to start off the dining by eating their edible menu card! Lunch was lovingly prepared by Italian Secrets and the Italian theme continued with a talented operatic performance by The Three Waiters; it left guests waving their napkins in the air!
But that wasn’t the end of proceedings by any means! After speeches guests were invited to join their children in the circus zone as a glow performer lit up the room and led the way for a medley of jugglers, plate spinners, magicians, caricaturists and face painters to entertain and amaze; our team distributed party poppers, glow sticks and Chinese fortune sticks to add to the fun. After the children were well and truly charged up and the adults exhausted, it was time to chill out in the Moroccan afternoon tea zone kitted out in low cushioned seating, Moroccan backdrops, candles, lanterns, with incense burning and to Arabic chill-out sounds. Guests were treated to tutti frutti ice cream and Moroccan sweets to round the gluttony off as they took in the scene.

As the final photos were taken and the guests departed back to St Pauls on their coaches, it was time to reflect on the whirlwind that was months and days in the planning and 8 hours only in the happening. It was an amazing job for clients with incredible imagination as well as trust in ours which allowed us to deliver such a unique and wonderful event.”

Many thanks to Kelly today’s utterly different showcase wedding. If you are a UKAWP member and would like to see one of your weddings feautred here please contact us.

Wedding Day Uniform

Friday, February 13th, 2009

This is something so many of our students struggle with, just what should I wear to a clients wedding? You will find every planner differs in what she wears but here are some guidelines to help you on your way:

  • Most importantly comfortable but smart shoes
  • Company T-Shirt for when setting up a wedding
  • Smart trousers or ideally a suit. Now personally I have always steered away from black as I want to distinguish myself from the waiting staff who traditionally wear black trousers/skirts and white shirts.
  • Choose a colour that is practical, the job invariably involves kneeling on the floor and climbing ladders – you want to avoid dirty marks if at all possible.
  • Smart shirt or top for the wedding, think about the colour and whether it highlights or drains your features. Wear some funky jewelry to accentuate your outfit and ensure it is not too ‘fitted’ or reveals too much flesh.
  • Finally you might want to consider getting a personalized badge so guests & suppliers know who you are.

Bride Wars Review: the latest planner stereotype

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

I was left thoroughly depressed last week after watching the latest wedding movie, Bride Wars. What impression are we leaving as an industry? I mean I know that films are entertainment and characters have to be exaggerated to make crowd-pleasers, but really? If you haven’t seen the film, here you go:

Firstly, the Manhattan wedding planner of all wedding planners managed to get two clients to sign up to her services in her office at the same time without them asking a single question about her fees, how she worked or anything; they just signed and left. All she asked was what themes they wanted and then dismissed them out of her office, packing them off with goody bags prepared by her assistant. If it were only that easy ….

Secondly, her assistant managed to screw up and double book both brides weddings on the same day and although the assistant was fired, the wedding planner herself experienced absolutely no bridal wrath – I can really see that happening…..

Thirdly, the wedding planner divulges information about one bride’s wedding to the other sparking a series of tit for tat revenges – I mean what about client confidentiality?

And lastly, on the day said planner prances around The Plaza Hotel, wearing an enormous corsage, barks (and I mean barks) instructions to her team and the venue’s staff and manages to flit between one wedding set up and the other and it’s all fine.

How does she get away with it? And how and why do film makers think it’s funny to project this image of us? Please don’t tell me that there are planners out there really behaving in this way. I mean, I hear some stories but …..

Are you ready to invest some of your money & time to growing your business? It can be hard to justify spending money on a seminar when you are uncertain where the next booking is coming from. But, we truly believe in the range of experienced speakers we have hired for the seminar. We feel confident that you will leave the seminar thankful you took some time out of you business to work on your business not in it.

Remember the seminar will be intimate in order that you have enough time to ask the presenters questions along with networking with your fellow attendees. There are not many spaces remaining so if you want to attend WPE ’09 then don’t forget to register here.

If you have not been to a UKAWP workshop before then there are a few pointers worth knowing, 1) we do not try to sell you membership to the UKAWP 2) we believe there are many benefits in networking with fellow planners and encourage you to form friendships with attendees. The WPE ’09 will be fun and is open to members and non members of the alliance.
The required investment to attend is £300 for non members of UKAWP and £270 for members. Apart from the opportunity to attend with like minded professional wedding planners the cost covers the following:
