WPE speaker focus: Ray Hutchin

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

We are so excited to have Ray back for a 4th year at WPE. We simply adore Ray and past attendees seem to agree with us rating him a favourite speaker. He is motivational and straight talking with his advice. He’ll leave you thinking “well of course I should do x, y, z, why didn’t I think of it earlier!”

Describe your company in 100 words or less!

We are a Business Coaching & Training Company that mainly operates in Essex, but we do have clients in London and the Isle of Man.

We offer a range of products and services from Free Introductory Seminars, Monthly MasterMind Groups, Workshops & Fortnightly and Weekly Coaching as well as our own Two Day Annual Conference.

We aim to help business owners in our unique way by giving them choice, working with them to help them grow and develop so their businesses follow.

We help in all areas of business including Sales & Marketing, Communication, Leadership, Finance, Time Management, Planning, Team Building, Culture, USP’s, System & Procedure, etc, etc.

What’s your USP?

Truly putting our clients first, I feel so many companies say they do and actually believe they do, but I believe they don’t. We make all our business decisions based on our Vision Statement, which includes “putting our clients’ needs first” even if it mean we will make no fee or receive a reduced fee.

What do you hope planners will learn on the day from your talk?

I will be happy if they all just took one thing and changed something they do for the better because of my talk. The greatest gift we have is to be able to learn more everyday and most people don’t. By learning more and more about ourselves we grow and therefore our business must grow as well.

How would your clients describe you?

Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Guru are amongst some of the flattering names I have been called, also one client calls me Coach - that always makes me feel good.

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

Yes, by being Honest. It’s what we should do as coaches, so for me it was no big deal in what I had to do, but it was still difficult to do. However, the client did appreciate it and the relationship has strengthened because of that conversation.

What is your vice?

Food - the more calories the better

What’s the best piece of business advice someone gave you?

I can’t think of one piece that stands out, I take all the advice I can and then use what is right for me, (as we are all individuals).

Continuing our introduction to the WPE speakers I’d like to introduce you to Tamsin who is a regular at WPE and always rated highly by our attendees. We know you will be motivated by her honest and intelligent marketing advice.

Describe your company in 100 words or less!

I am The Small Business Marketing Mentor, and I help small businesses and fledgling entrepreneurs to make a big impact, on a bargain budget. It’s all about harnessing the passion that you feel for your business, and turning that into a client magnet that brings in more customers and more sales – whilst still being you!

What’s your USP?

My USP is my approach to marketing, which is easy, no non-sense, full of useful shortcuts, and actually enjoyable! …and did I mention that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune?!

What do you hope planners will learn on the day from your talk?

That good marketing is about showing off the best of yourself, not making up things that you think people would like to hear.

How would your clients describe you?

Fun, caring, supportive, insightful, and a little bit bonkers (but just a little bit).

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

We’ve ALL had challenging clients. However, I get very few of them these days, and I put that down to focusing on attracting the right clients for me, rather than trying to please everyone.

What is your vice?

Am I only allowed one? My vice is food. I love cooking, and I love eating. Especially cake! I’ve even formed a regular networking event around it – International Cake Testing!

What’s the best piece of business advice someone gave you?

Doing one thing at a time is the quickest way to get multiple things done.

What do you hope planners will learn on the day from your talk?
I hope I’m able to give planners an idea of the differences and similarities between US and UK weddings. I also hope I’m able to elaborate a bit on what types of services we offer our clients and offer suggestions for “expanding horizontally” by offering other products and services to maximize profit from each client (even those who are simply interested in our smallest “Month Of” package). I have also heard that trends often start in the US and then make their way to the UK so hopefully I’ll be able to share some insight into the growing trends that are currently taking shape here.

How would your clients describe you?
Very personable, enthusiastic, excited, friendly, professional, knowledgeable, dependable, calming.

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?
I quite often have challenging clients. In fact, most of my clients are challenging in their own ways. Recently one of my brides came in for a meeting and she was stressed to the max. She said her mother and all the ladies in her wedding party were bombarding her with brochures, items from past weddings they’ve attended, and their own opinions and suggestions. She said her head was spinning and she felt that addressing each of their concerns and embracing each of their suggestions was becoming more difficult than actually planning her wedding. I reminded the bride that they genuinely have her interests at heart and that she should appreciate how deeply they care but that it is HER wedding day and that she needs to feel empowered enough to make her own decisions, confidently.

What is your vice?
I’m a “workaholic.” I feel like my computer is always calling to me and it takes every ounce of my effort to resist. I have a new baby at home and I want to spend every moment with her, especially since babyhood is so short but I often feel anxiety about not responding to emails as soon as they come in as I never want to disappoint a client.

What’s the best piece of business advice someone gave you?
Know when to say “no.” In my earlier, novice, years I was eager to find a way to sign and appease every potential client. I gave huge discounts and took on more work than I could handle. But (in my experience) what I learned is that the clients who push the hardest for the best deal are also the ones who ask for the most and rarely appreciate your work in the end. I learned that my time is valuable and that the projects I take on have to be worthwhile, which often means saying “no.” If I respect myself and my time, so will my clients.

Speaker focus: Lloyd Dobbie

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Regular attendees at UKAWP events will recognise Lloyd  but this time as well as photographing WPE he is going to present as well!

lloyd_dobbie1

Describe your company in 100 words or less!

I love photographing weddings and I work hard to make sure that this love shows through in the quality of the work I deliver to my clients.

Although I’ve been commissioned to photograph more than 300 weddings over the last 12 years I still find something new every time. Each occasion is a different blend of venue, church, flowers and, of course, the two ’stars’ and the supporting cast!

It’s this variety and the spontaneity it produces that keeps me inspired and passionate about my wedding photography.

What’s your USP?

Over a decade of experience capturing weddings across the UK and in Europe.

What do you hope planners will learn on the day from your talk?

Wedding Planners will already be familiar with the work a photographer does on the wedding day but I’m hoping to give them an appreciation of the importance of post-production in the creative process. The best photographers know that the value of good editing and processing can’t be over stated!

How would your clients describe you?

My clients often say that I helped to put them at their ease and they hardly noticed me working throughout the day.

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

One that springs to mind was a wedding for a high profile couple when the photograph of them walking down the aisle had to be perfectly captured and then uploaded within 20 minutes for distribution to ‘Hello’, ‘OK’ and all the major UK Sunday newspapers. I dealt with the challenge by drawing on my years of experience to get the image we needed and then passing it on to my IT team to do the rest.

What is your vice?

Expensive Chocolate!

What’s the best piece of business advice someone gave you?

When your business is busy be sure to schedule your family into your diary and make those personal ‘appointments’ as crucial and immovable as any client one.

WPE Speaker Focus: Top Left Design

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Here at the UKAWP we love Keren who owns Top Left Design. not only is she incredibly talented and creative she is truly a wonderful person who is eager to pass on her knowledge. She has presented at WPE before so we are delighted to have her back!

headshot-kerenlerner

Describe your company in 100 words or less!

Were a friendly team of talented designers and coders, with 9 staff total, based in Soho London, creating online, and helping small businesses improve their presence online.

What’s your USP?

At Top Left Design we specialise in designing personality into websites, so it feels more like a face to face experience. We want our clients to embrace what’s unique about their businesses and encourage them to bring out the “human aspect”. Some people find this hard but it works so much better if you can see and learn about the people in the business, their stories, case studies. We encourage and train clients on unique copywriting and images, blogs, and active social media interaction.

What do you hope planners will learn on the day from your talk?

How to ensure they have a unique website presence which shows off what’s great about them as planners, and gives visitors a really great understanding of why they should choose them.

How would your clients describe you?

Creative, reliable, professional and patient - with an understated yet precise and personable professionalism that sets me ahead of my peers.  (These are actual quotes from a couple of my LinkedIn  testimonials!)

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

No, I have never had a challenging client. Haha just kidding!

I try and be humble at all times, and see things from their point of view. If things go wrong, I think - how could I do better next time? And then I do! I have learned so much from working with clients over the years. I want to make sure every one is happy, and tend to take things to heart, but I know often people are really just stressed and take it out on others, and the best way to deal with this is calmly. I always keep filed all written correspondence, filing all emails in corresponding client folders, and following up conversations with a written record of who said what - this really helps to ensure good communications.

What is your vice?

I like cake, chocolate, cookies, ice cream and pizza. But at the moment I have been really good as I am on the Ultimate Yogi 108 day yoga programme (see www.theultimateyogi.com) and it’s amazing.

What’s the best piece of business advice someone gave you?

That really no one really knows anything. I was told that 18 years ago but some one I knew and it stuck with me. What he meant was that everyone is just trying to do their best - and even people who are celebrities or big shots in the business world have worries and want to make a good impression - just like you!

Dominate Your Domains

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012
The following article was written by the wonderful Tamsin Fox-Davies : long term friend of the UKAWP and back by popular demand to speak at our Wedding Planning Excellence Seminar in March 2012. Thank you Tamsin, as ever, for your insight and practical advice…
tamsin-fox-davies

You’ve got a website and a domain name, and this week I want you to check out the other possible domains that you may want to buy for your site. For Example: I have my site on tamsinfoxdavies.com but I also own tamsinfoxdavies.co.uk. Apart from the obvious “domain extensions” (.co.uk, etc) you want to get the most likely “domain variations” as well. For me that would mean getting tamsin-foxdavies.com, tamsinfox-davies.com, tamsinfd.com etc.

Do you see how that would work? Once you buy the extra domains, just forward them all to your actual website. There’s two reasons to do this:

  1. Some people will type your domain rather than googling you, and they might not get it right. This happens a lot more often than you think, and you don’t want to lose those visitors.
  2. If you’ve got all the relevant domains, no one else can buy them.   You don’t want people with similar company names buying YOUR domains, so go get ‘em!
