Member Focus – Mint Events
It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to our first Destination Member in New Zealand, Mint Events. Take it away Laura Larsson…
How did it all start?
I moved to NZ 8 years ago and chose a small populated area to set up home with my then boyfriend / now husband! I couldn’t find any businesses / companies where I could get a job where I could use my previously developed event management skills. ‘Reluctantly’ I decided to set up my own business as an event manger but after 2 years, in what has since been labeled as one of the most romantic destinations in the world, I realized my calling was more towards the wedding sector. It’s grown year on year ever since!
How does the NZ wedding market differ to the UK one?
I’ve not had a huge amount of experience in the UK market now, compared to NZ – but from what I’m aware of weddings run quite differently here. Kiwis’ tend to be a lot more laid back and prefer to do things themselves – hence wedding planning is not as in demand over here. They tend to have more modest budgets and rarely go OTT on anything. There’s a huge tendency to have ‘location’ photos – time away from guests for scenic photos – and why wouldn’t you when we’re surrounded by some of the most picturesque scenes in the world!
Do you have a favourite venue?
Yes and no – yes, based on the positive relationships developed at some over others where by my job is much more pleasurable. No, based on the fact that I always strive to ensure that the best venue applicable to a clients requirements / preferences is presented – regardless of how easy or hard my job may turn out!
How would clients describe you?
I think my clients would describe me as experienced, professional, organized and personable.
Wedding planner you admire?
Rhi from Hey Gorgeous Events in the states
How do you unwind?
With a cup of tea and cuddles with my little 3 year old boy, Lucas!
What themes are you working on for 2012/2013?
Going into our Summer season over here now – and I’ve got a couple of vintage themes (which seems standard annually these days) but am really excited about a couple of contemporary weddings with clean lines, bold colours and chevron patterns!
What trends are you seeing?
Lolly Bars and Cake buffets are proving to be an ongoing trend – I’m pleased and never bored of them, as they’re just so much fun to style and so entertaining for guests. Likewise, photobooths are massive still.
What is your signature dish?
Entertainment, Entertainment and more Entertainment. I always emphasize to my clients the importance of keeping guests entertained. Bored guests means a boring wedding! It’s not just how good it looks – it’s how good it tastes! Timeline management is also key in my books – it’s the backbone of all successful events, it’s the stitching in the perfect wedding dress – without it, it’ll fall apart!
Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love to design?
Dead – Audrey Hepburn’s
Alive – Lady Gaga’s
Is the job as glamorous as you thought?
Yes, when it’s all happening – no during set up and most certainly not during de-rig! The worst bit!
What is your vice?
I’m a control freak of course – and any planner who says’ otherwise is denying the truth 😉
Thanks for sharing Laura. Although we won’t get to see you so often over here, we all feel that we know you a little better now and you’re clearly the “go-to girl” for kiwi style.
