INTERNATIONAL PLANNERS

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

In a new series on international wedding planners we welcome Deborah from Just Get Married who is based in Australia and plans weddings for local couples and international clients. Here she gives us an insight into her life as a wedding planner in Australia.

Just Get Married - Australia

How does a typical wedding day run in your country?

In Australia weddings follow a very similar schedule of the day as in the UK.

  • A pre-wedding face to face meeting is held a couple of days before the wedding to reconfirm all details of the day and to get to know personally your wedding coordinator and celebrant
  • It starts with the bride getting ready, with hairdresser and makeup artist at her hotel.
  • It is followed by a pre-wedding photo & video shoot of both groom and bride in separate venues.
  • The guests and groom then leave for the ceremony location where our coordinator/photographer/videographer/celebrant are waiting, followed by the bride and bridal party.
  • The coordinator assists guests and groom with the seating. She then greets the bride on arrival and the ceremony starts.
  • Ceremony lasts approx 20 minutes depending on your personal choices, and can be enriched with any wording/vows/ prayers as the couples wishes.
  • During the readings, a candle ceremony takes place with the couple lighting together a personalized candle with 2 separate candles, symbolizing their union. It is a very touching ceremony for the couple and the participants!
  • At the end of the ceremony, the registrar is signed and the couple is officially declared husband and wife by the Australian Marriage Law (valid worldwide).
  • The ceremony may be followed by a butterfly release, champagne cocktail and canapés, Sydney Harbour Mini Cruise, together with after ceremony photography/video coverage.
  • The guests and bridal party then leave with our pre-arranged minibuses, limousines and CLK wedding cars to the chosen reception venue.

What type of location do most wedding ceremonies themselves take place?

In Australia you can literally get married anywhere! On a beach, in any of Sydney’s picturesque gardens, a luxury yacht/cruiser on the harbour, or even inside the Opera House or on a Sydney private romantic Island! The most requested wedding locations in Sydney are Gardens with a backdrop of the Opera House and Harbour views, followed by intimate beach ceremonies and Island weddings.

What type of location do most wedding receptions take place?

As specializing in Destination Weddings, the Harbour receptions are the most popular! They offer amazing views, the finest food and wines. Sydney reception venues can accommodate small groups of as little as 5-6 guests to 200-300 guests.

Just Get Married - Australia

How many guests are usual to such a wedding?

Depending on nationalities, most of the time it is only the bride and groom with few friends and guests. If either the bride or groom are from Australia, then it can be either around 60 guests both local and from overseas or even 200 guests!

What customs/traditions are most common in your weddings?

Bride and Groom keep a piece of the wedding fruit cake and freeze it until the first wedding anniversary, then eat it as good luck for the years to come. Kitchen tea party is also a big thing in Australia, where bride and all girlfriends get together. The girlfriends bring kitchenware gifts and ’surprise’ the bride with jokes, games and most of the time a male stripper turns up dressed as a pizza delivery guy!

What does a typical wedding cost?

Weddings in Australia can be very cheap if you know how to budget it. Our packages for examples, start from as little as AUS$ 2000 including wedding location hire, celebrant, all planning and legal costs, bridal car, flowers, ceremony aisles items etc. Big weddings 38-40,000 (AU$)

How important are independent wedding planners in your country?

Very important! An independent wedding planner works independently on a no-commission basis. Therefore she/he will source venues/suppliers/locations based on your own wedding ideas and styles. A Local wedding planner has the right local knowledge and wedding expertise to assist you with the right choices keeping it within your budget!

Any anecdotes/comments/tips on planning a wedding in your country.

If you are thinking of a big wedding overseas, hire a local wedding planner from start to end, not only for a few bits and bobs. When overseas, you cannot have control over the planning and knowing how things work there. A local wedding expert has all the right tools and knowledge to deliver the wedding of your dreams in Australia, stress-free hassle-free with 100% satisfaction on the outcome!

Elope to Australia and organize a wedding reception in UK on your return, where photos and videos are shown to the guests. This is perfect for 2 reasons: family and friends don’t feel left out with the great bonus to wear that gorgeous wedding dress again!

Northern Networking Evening

Monday, September 28th, 2009

On Tuesday the 22nd of September the UKAWP held its first Northern Networking event at the gorgeous Nunsmere Hall Hotel. The alliance’s Northern Representative - Andrea Swift, hosted the evening.

Andrea was joined by other colleagues from the UKAWP, as well as some planners who had recently attended our training courses or were planning to attend in the near future as well as local established planners who wanted to find out more about the Alliance.

A great time was had by all, with everyone getting chance to chat, mingle and exchange business cards and ideas.

Wendy Grove from Boda Bridal was also present, giving planners the opportunity to pick her brains about the current trends in wedding gowns. Attendees were also treated to some delicious cup cakes courtesy of Leanne from Bake me -I’m yours

We have had a great response from those that attended - here are a few of the comments from the event: -

I found it a really useful event to attend, it was great to meet and chat to wedding planners at all different stages of their business.” Emma-Wedding Daze

I found yesterday’s Networking Event absolutely invaluable. It answered so many questions for me and it was wonderful to meet everyone. I left the event feeling so confident, full of inspiration and eager to get started. Thank you ever so much” Siobhan Shelton

It was really good to meet you and found you very welcoming and helpful. I had a great time chatting to the others and got some really useful tips and advice. I will definitely keep in touch and I’m really looking forward to launching” Alison Forster.

NETWORKING OVERVIEW

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

On Thursday 17th September we held a networking evening for wedding planners at 30 Pavilion Road , London. With nearly 50 planners in attendance it was a great evening. The venue kept a supply of drinks and canapés coming round and everyone had a chance to say 30 seconds about themselves and their company. It was the perfect opportunity to catch up with colleagues after a busy summer season. As always Lloyd Dobbie was in attendance taking some wonderful pictures of the evening. We had a great mix of members, non members, new and established planners. Our next event will be WPE ‘10 in February 2010, further details coming next week.

Member Focus: Bernadette Chapman

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

In our regular fortnightly series we welcome Bernadette from Dream Occasions in Essex who is the training director for the UKAWP.

Bernadette Chapman

Why did you become a wedding planner?

I was a very successful PA in the city for 10 years and worked for an American company so of course my stateside colleagues talked about hiring wedding planners for their weddings. This intrigued me so I started researching the internet about the industry; it was still relatively unknown in the UK so I learnt a lot from US websites. There are a lot of similarities between my job as a PA and wedding planning.

What’s your USP?

Calm & logical approach to wedding planning. I have an incredible knowledge of marquee weddings and the logistics involved in organising events at home. I also run another company with my husband called Dream Occasions Hire so I tend to have many useful products for clients to hire.

Do you have a favourite venue?

Well marquees are my favourite weddings but if I were to choose a venue then I do love Leez Priory , this is because you have the rare opportunity to create an outside wedding ceremony. The chairs lined up on the lawn look breathtaking, I love the fact it feels like the couples home for the weekend with many rooms to choose from for different aspects of the day/night. The staff are very organised and their wedding coordinators happy to work alongside an independent planner.

How would your clients describe you?

Friendly, brutally honest, focussed, reassuring, diplomatic, dedicated & calm.

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

A few! Every client is different and brings with it new challenges, I tend to work out quickly what line of communication they prefer and what particular worries they might have, I can then ensure my service alleviates any stresses they have.

How do you unwind?

I love to read, anything from girly books to business tips and my favourite author is Stephen King. Not what you’d expect from a wedding planner! I also love to go hiking with the family and camping, this allows me time to relax in a natural environment with no access to the internet and normally limited signal on my phone as I favour camping in forests. My fellow directors do think I’m a bit mad for camping but as a family we love it (I will admit to countless blankets and hot water bottles to keep warm)

Which wedding planners work do you admire / respect and why?

I admire my 2 fellow directors in the UKAWP not only for their work within the UKAWP but for constantly evolving their businesses which I think is essential, but it would be too cliché to say them so… I love the work by Sasha Souza and Preston Bailey both US celebrity planners, I think their work is amazing. And finally I admire Siobhan Craven Robins she has raised the profile of wedding planners through her TV appearances & celebrity weddings here in the UK, and she is very nice as well!

What is your biggest achievement since launching?

I guess launching the UKAWP, having the vision that the UK needed a UK focussed organisation for wedding planners. Also having the belief in myself and vision for growth which sadly many planners do not have. If you don’t know what you are aiming for you will of course always be disappointed.

What trends are you seeing for 2009?

Mix matched bohemian chic which is sometimes harder to create then a simple pink wedding!

Thanks Bernadette, dont forget to visit Dream Occasions to find out more about her services.

Training Review

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Over the weekend I taught 10 ladies our Business Practicalities course which we held at Staverton Park, Daventry. As always the weekend was great fun and in fact they asked so many questions we actually overrun on the Saturday. I hope they all stay in touch and I look forward to seeing them at future events. You can see some of the students below.

One of our students had a celebrity moment on Sunday when driving to the venue because she appeared (via telephone) on Radio 1. Presenter Dev asked her to plan his wedding for £12,000, I think she answered him incredibly well and I’m very proud of her. You can listen to the show here (timecode 1:42) Her website is being designed at the moment but should you wish to contact Kayleigh email us and we will pass your details to Kayleigh.

Just what is Twitter? - Pt 2

Monday, September 14th, 2009

In part 2 of our twitter guide new guest blogger, internet expert, David Oliver of Nettle Web Design Ltd. will show you how to get started on the incredibly popular social networking website, Twitter! Now Twitter is a must for marketing savvy businesses to get involved with.

Keeping Tweets Appropriate

  • Show that you have interests outside of work, but keep non-business tweets appropriate and not too personal!
  • Don’t give away all your secrets - your competitors may read what you post on Twitter, even if they aren’t directly following you.
  • Only post tweets that you would be happy for any client, competitor or friend to read. If you want to use Twitter for personal use in addition to business, consider setting up two accounts - one for each - and keep them separate.

Trending Topics

Current popular topics - called trending topics - are shown on the right of your Twitter page. Hashtags show topics being trended deliberately to enable easy following of tweets (eg #iranelection, #fathersday); add your own tweets on that topic by including the hashtag in your tweet.

There are certain regular trends you can utilise, with #FollowFriday being the most common - every Friday people tweet lists of other people they recommend following, eg

#FollowFriday networking in Essex @olivda @suesharples @heathernewmarch

Sending Tweets When You’re Away From the Office

There are plenty of websites that will let you schedule tweets - i.e. set up tweets in advance that will be sent at a pre-designated time. Try www.hootsuite.com Hootsuite also has it’s own tool for shortening URLs, and tools for tracking stats such as how many people clicked on a URL you tweeted

If you’re out-and-about, you can send tweets from your mobile phone or PDA. Visit the Twitter help pages for more information about this.

Tracking Your Followers

If you have large numbers of followers, use a site like www.tweetdeck.com/beta to organise your network into groups of people - so that you can easily see what related groups or favourite people are tweeting.

If a tweet is particularly useful, click on the star next to it. It will then be added to your “Favourites” list for future reference.

Just what is Twitter?!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Today we hear from new guest blogger, internet expert, David Oliver of Nettle Web Design Ltd will show you how to get started on the incredibly popular social networking website, Twitter! Now Twitter is a must for marketing savvy businesses to get involved with. Part 2 of this post will appear next week.

Getting Started on Twitter

Go to Twitter and set up a free account

  • Choose a user name (this must be unique) and password - you will need these to log in to Twitter in the future
  • Choose a background picture
  • Write a short bio about yourself (160 characters or less)
  • Add a close-up photo of yourself

Finding Some People to Follow

Start with warm targets

  • Industry colleagues
  • Your suppliers and venues
  • Networking groups like Women On Top!
  • Members of the UKAWP

Use the “Find People” link to find people by name or Twitter ID

Follow people who you think will be interesting and/or useful

Follow people that other people are following or are being followed by!

Posting Your First Tweets

Post tweets about what’s happening in your industry in general, and in your own business in particular

Find information from:

  • trade magazines
  • newspapers
  • other websites
  • television and radio
  • other people

Interacting With Others on Twitter

Re-tweet information that other people have already tweeted, by putting RT at the start of a tweet - and make sure you credit the original tweeter by including their Twitter ID.

Send a direct publicly visible message by putting @ followed by the Twitter ID at the beginning of a tweet

Send a direct (private) message by putting D followed by the Twitter ID at the start of a tweet.

General Tips

  • Don’t over-post! If you regularly post too many tweets, people will quickly feel over-loaded and will stop following you
  • If you struggle to find things to post on Twitter, consider storing up snippets as you find them, in a Word document, and spread out when you put them up on Twitter.
  • Show that you are an expert in your field: comment on related business topics, recommend books and courses, and answer other people’s questions

Including a link to a website

You can paste a website address (URL) directly into Twitter, but this will eat into your 140 characters and may not leave you enough space to write anything else!

Go to www.tinyurl.com and put a long URL into their site - it will be converted into a much shorter one, which you can then put into Twitter.

Including a picture or photo

If you have a photo that is already elsewhere on the internet (eg on Flickr or your own website) you can link to it in the same way you would link to a website address.

To add a new picture, go to www.twitpic.com - a sister site of Twitter - and upload a picture. You can log in to Twitpic with your normal Twitter ID. Click on Upload Photos (at the top right of the screen) and follow the instructions to log in.

Blocking inappropriate followers

Keep a regular eye on your followers, and block any that are inappropriate, or that might come across as inappropriate to your potential business clients. This might include:

  • followers with an inappropriate ID or photo
  • followers that are clearly spammers or pushing “get rich quick” schemes
  • followers spouting very strong or controversial opinions on sensitive topics such as politics, religion, sex, etc
  • followers you feel uncomfortable with in any way

Member Focus: Zoe Lingard

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

In our regular fortnightly series we welcome Zoë from Weddings by Zoë Lingard who is a full member of the UKAWP.

Why did you become a wedding planner?

I found myself at that stage in life where countless wedding invitations seem to come through your door. All too often the weddings felt generic and I found myself thinking that there must be more; all of the couples were very different so why were their weddings so similar? Over time and whilst planning my own wedding, I found myself becoming massively passionate about weddings and creating a celebration that was personal and as fun to attend as it was to be the couple. For me, life has always been about the minute details and being a planner combines my love of people, creativity and organization.

What’s your USP?

We place a big emphasis on the design aspects of a wedding and strive to make all our weddings (each with their very different styles and themes) reflective of the client’s personality.

What’s your signature dish?

I like to challenge and push things and don’t think things should be done a particular way just because ‘that’s the way they’ve always been done’.

Do you have a favourite venue?

I recently got to work in an ‘empty shell venue’ which as you’d expect, had nothing provided except the very basics and absolutely everything had to be hired in (just like a marquee wedding). I love the freedom and momentary nature of these kind of weddings; one day they’re there and the next they’ve disappeared without a trace. These types of weddings feel extra unique to me.

Have you ever had a challenging client and how did you deal with it?

Yes, definitely. The UKAWP have always been a great support, having seemingly unending patience to listen to me incoherently ramble on about the slightest nuances of a particular job and give me great advice. Had it not been for Kelly, Sandy and Bernadette, I have no doubt that I would have given up before I’d really started.

If you could plan a celebrity wedding (alive or dead) whose would it be?

Jacqueline Bouvier and John Kennedy or Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier; I love the style and romance of the 50s.

Is the job as glamorous as you thought?

I’m not sure I thought it would be glamorous per se and this wasn’t a big motivating factor for me. In reality the job has snippets of glamour now and again but the day to day reality is much more down to earth than most people imagine. When I first meet people and they coo over hearing what I do, I’m always quick to say “oh it’s not as glamorous as it sounds.”

What themes are you working on for 2010?

I have a particularly lovely bohemian vintage wedding that I’m currently working on for a really fun and quirky couple. I’m also working on a really girlie, pink fest which is completely out of my usual style and it’s great fun adding piles of glitter to everything!

What’s your biggest achievement since launching?

Actually being able to buy things using income that has solely been earned from the company is deeply satisfying!

What is your vice?

Celebrity trash. I am ashamed to say I’m a Perez Hilton addict and can occasionally be found watching The Hills (oh the shame!). It drives my husband to absolute distraction.

What trends are you seeing for 2010?

Candy bars and photobooths will be massive in the UK over the next few months. Oversized balloons, moustaches on sticks and bolder colour palettes are also ones to watch.

Do take time to visit Zoë website and learn how she can help you with your wedding.
