Grooms, Technology and Weddings….

29 March, 2013

We recently undertook a quick survey which looked in brief at two specific trends: Grooms getting more involved in wedding planning and the use of technology amongst couples planning their weddings.

Grooms and Wedding Planning

Almost 84% of UKAWP Members who responded to the survey have noticed Grooms becoming more involved in wedding planning over the last 2-3 years, with under 10% saying they haven’t noticed much change.

The most likely elements of the wedding for Grooms to become involved in are venue, entertainment, transport, photography/ film, food and drink, some of which may not be a surprise, but 27% of Grooms are very much involved with all parts the planning.

Clients using Technology in their Wedding Planning

Ninety one percent of UKAWP Members who responded to the survey have noticed their clients using technology to help manage and organise their weddings with the order of popularity as follows.

  • 62% are using various devices and programs to share photos
  • 49% are creating their own spreadsheets of venues and suppliers and sharing with their planners
  • 82% are using Pinterest or similar ‘mood board’ devices
  • 26% are using video calls to show venues/ dresses/ other ideas
  • 41% are using specific wedding planning apps on their phones

We hope planners will find this to be valuable information as it demonstrates some of the ways in which the market we work in has changed. Involving the Groom, and in some cases perhaps working predominantly with him, is key, and keeping up with the various ways in which clients wish to interact and share planning data is very important and will doubtless continue to be so.

I loved it when

25 March, 2013

Most wedding planners choose this career because they love people and especially people in love, they also get a thrill from investigating something elusive or unique for clients. So here at the UKAWP we thought we would chat to our members and ask them a range of questions in a new series called “I loved it when

What has been the stand out theme common to all your weddings and clients this year?

Outdoor ceremonies have been the request this year. And given our inclement summer weather, it was a miracle that I managed to give all couples their outdoor ceremonies!

Outdoor ceremonies are wonderful for rustic/vintage/earthy weddings. If you would like an outdoor ceremony it’s important to have a contingency plan in place in case you have to move it indoors. I remember one wedding where I spent the morning counting clouds!

What’s been the most beautiful / ‘wow’ wedding thing you’ve seen this year at a wedding?

I planned a coastal outdoor ceremony for a sweet American couple on a cliff in the fishing village of Howth, Co Dublin. The backdrop of sweet heather, blue sea and sky, seagulls and sheer cliff rock was simply breathtaking.

Member Focus - Kefalonia Weddings

22 March, 2013

Today we are very pleased to introduce you to one of our Destination Members, Kefalonia Weddings, based on this beautiful Greek island. Over to you Donna….

How did it all start?

My friend wanted to get married on the island. At the time the only choice was through the holiday companies, so I just arranged her reception. However this got me thinking and gradually over the next year and a half – Kefalonia Weddings was born!

Do you have a favourite venue?

I think my favourite venue is the stone chapel at the Apostolata Hotel in Skala. Not only is it in a gorgeous spot overlooking the sea but the staff and facilities are so good, it makes for a perfect combination.

How would clients describe you?

Most of my testimonials describe me as friendly, helpful and organised, so not a bad combination!

Wedding planner/s you admire?

I must admit being out in Greece I don’t get to mix with many other planners, so I can’t really answer this truthfully.

How do you unwind?

I am also a qualified aerobics teacher, so taking my Pilates and aerobic classes 3 times a week help me unwind and keep fit at the same time.

What themes are you working on for 2013/14?

Beach weddings are very popular again this summer, as are the country, rural feel.

What trends are you seeing?

A lot of rustic/country looks with wild flowers as bridal bouquets and relaxed receptions with big cushions and bunting.

What is your signature dish?

I don’t think I’ve found it yet!

Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love to design?

I think Elton John would have been a wonderful challenge, as your imagination could just run away and there would be no wedding budget to have to be aware of!

Is the job as glamorous as you thought?

I don’t think glamorous is the correct word actually. It is exhausting but very rewarding. Every couple is a new episode, to the wonderful book of wedding planning.

What is your vice?

I do enjoy having a glass of champagne with the couple after the ceremony – its the sign of a good job when everyone is smiling, laughing or crying tears of joy.

What’s the most unusual/elusive thing you’ve had to source this year?

As a wedding planner it is not unusual to get some weird and wonderful requests and so sourcing things which are slightly out of the ordinary become a regular part of the job. However, I have some American clients who are getting married in London in December and they recently asked me to help them with a very unique request. The Groom, his Best Man and Ushers would all like to apply for a Lordship while they are in the UK - effectively making them English Lords. After a fair amount of discussion and much research, we now have all of the information we need and it looks like there may well be seven new Lords in England before the end of the year!
