The 2016 London Mix & Mingle

4 November, 2016

Thank you so much to all of those who joined us for the London Mix and Mingle at One Belgravia at the end of September. We had over 150 people come along, which is the largest number of guests at a London Mix and Mingle ever! It was fabulous to see so many UKAWP colleagues, good friends and wedding suppliers mixing and mingling at this stunning venue.

We would like to send a massive thank you to those who took part and made the night such a great success.

Some of you may not know that the suppliers who take part in the event do it all complimentary, and it all starts with the venue.

A huge thank you to Jemimah and Molly at One Belgravia, our hosts for the evening, and Phillipa and the team at One Catering, who provided the drinks and canapés and took amazing care of us all.

Many UKAWP members mentioned how beautiful this venue is, the stunning staircase gives a real wow entrance and the venue itself is a great blank canvas for any wedding or event. To top it off it’s in a fabulous location and a two minute walk away from Hyde Park Station.

The amazing Larry Walshe never fails to disappoint, creating a handmade Swan to display his lovely flowers - lucky enough for the swan (who was without it’s lake luckily) our friends at Wow Grass provided real grass for it to sit on.

The central focal point in the room was the fantastic real “grass bar” from Wow Grass. We cannot thank Caroline and Roger enough for providing the bar at short notice and for Roger’s good humour and patience in getting it up the stairs and in place. They are such a lovely team to work with and can turn their hand to almost anything you need covered in grass!

As our guests arrived they were treated to bespoke badges designed and produced by the uber-talented Kay from Intricate Creations.

We cannot thank Sach and his team at GC Couture enough for creating such a fantastic display of deliciousness with their ‘Indulgence Bar’. With so many treats it was hard to pick a favourite, but we know the cake pops are always popular. Lucky for us all, we had goody bags to take away (or devour on the return journey home!)

If you managed to tear yourself away from chatting to your fabulous industry colleagues you would have discovered a few more surprises. Drawing some fun (and very accurate) caricatures was the extremely talented Simon & Sheba from Bitter & Twisted, providing us all with the coolest handbag mirrors we have ever seen. The speed these were being done was just astonishing

Who would have failed to miss Sam Sam the Bubbleman and The Bubble Wizard, the award winning, entertaining bubble showmen with some clever tricks up their sleeves. We had so much fun playing bouncing bubbles and many people found themselves inside giant bubbles.

Mark at Demograffix was there to showcase his talents, displaying his artwork for us all to enjoy and sign. Mark can create bespoke art at your event and is great for a clients looking for something different for their guest book.

Our lighting, sound and DJ sets were provided by the ever reliable and brilliant Mark at Mighty Fine Entertainment, who are also UKAWP Supplier Members.

We are so grateful to the talented singer songwriter and guitarist, Pete Winwood, for sharing his upbeat indie music from his latest album, Million Ways, and Tony from a production, events and entertainment company, Gorilla Street Promotions, for making this happen.

Any event wouldn’t be complete without a fabulous photographer and for the second time we were honoured to have the lovely Kate from Kate Nielen Photography. Thank you for capturing the evening so beautifully.

We were also lucky to have Chloe from Takes2Videos film the event for us - which is coming soon and will be posted on our facebook page.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your pictures from the event on social media. Please feel free to join in and if you wish to add anything please use #ukawp or #ukawpsocial.

Much love and appreciation to this year’s organising team:

Our Wedding Planning Courses – FAQ’s

3 October, 2016

Now summer is over we are receiving a high quantity of calls regarding our training courses. In some cases students are seeking advice and guidance about choosing the right course for them. Therefore, we hope this answers some of your questions. But that doesn’t mean you can’t call me with a new question, I love speaking with those entering this exciting career so don’t be shy pick up the phone on 07939 215 531 or training@ukawp.com.

Bernadette Chapman-086

I have no experience in events; will this course be suitable for me?

Yes definitely, our courses cover all the basics you need to launch your career as a wedding planner, previous students have come from a range of careers including solicitors, nurses and teachers.

Which course is right for you?

This question we are asked a lot, just what course is right for you to take?

Business Practicalities – ideal for those launching as independent wedding planners

Topics covered include:

  • Launching & running a small business
  • Importance of branding & understanding your niche
  • Marketing, PR & advertising for your business
  • Skills for success
  • Importance of pre launch research
  • Understanding your niche
  • Services to offer & pricing for profitability
  • Negotiating
  • Preparing for your consultation inc. practical session
  • Paint the dream, sell the dream
  • Using social media to enhance your profile

Step by Step – ideal for independent planners, venue co-ordinators and those wishing to organise weddings for an external company.

Topics covered include:

  • Marriage laws
  • Etiquette scenarios
  • Sourcing the dream venue
  • Sourcing the dream team of suppliers inc. analysis of each category
  • Financial planning for your client
  • Creating the perfect wedding day schedule
  • Your emergency kit
  • Organising the ceremony / drink reception / wedding breakfast / evening party
  • Destination weddings
  • Duties of the wedding party
  • Post wedding service

Will I be qualified after attending the course?

You will receive a certificate confirming you have trained with us along with a logo to use on your marketing materials. We strongly feel your journey as a wedding planner begins after you have trained with us, that is why we hold regular workshops and offer mentoring to past students to increase your knowledge. Attending a course and receiving a certificate should not mean you know everything there is to know about weddings which is why we will never use the term “qualified as a wedding planner”.

The role of a wedding planner is an important one and treasured by our couples marrying, but we’re not training to be a doctor or lawyer, there are no requirements to be “qualified” to work as a wedding planner.

Remember the wedding industry is unregulated so before registering and paying for any training qualification, you need to ensure it’s the right course to take. For example you might prefer home learning in which case we can recommend some fabulous online schools to consider. Speak with other wedding planners to get their recommendations about who they trained with or how they started their business.

Ask the wedding planners how clients choose them: do the clients choose them because of being a member of the UKAWP for example, or do they get selected because of a qualification?

Aren’t the UKAWP competitors to my new career?

No, no, no! It is vitally important you view your fellow wedding planners as colleagues not competitors. The tutors are all very different and successful in their respective areas; we don’t view any student or planner as a ‘competitor’. Feedback from students has reiterated the tutors experience as a highlight of the course. You can see some via our Facebook page.

Can I join the UKAWP after the course?

Please do apply for associate membership, all applications are vetted for professionalism and your tutor’s experience of you on the training course will be included in any decision made.

How should I compare your course to others?

We appreciate you may wish to compare courses before choosing the right one for you. A few things you should ask when making enquiries:

  • Who wrote the course and is it a US or UK text?
  • Who conducts the training and what is their background/experience?
  • Can you speak with previous students for feedback?
  • When was the course last updated?

I hope this helps but don’t hesitate to call me with further questions on 07939 215 531

Mentoring for Wedding Planners

25 September, 2016

As a continuation of the support we give planners via our training courses, we also offer wedding planning mentoring for a select few. Working with an experienced, successful wedding planner can be incredibly beneficial for planners in the early years.

We have just a small number of mentoring sessions available with a director or one of our ambassadors. The sessions are led by you. In short we ask from the outset how we can help you and each session moves forward on this basis, with goal setting a key element. In the past we have helped planners get clearer on their branding, work out profitability or put new business practices in place.

Directors-of-the-UKAWP

It is not essential that those taking up the mentoring service are members of the UKAWP.

Your mentoring will include the following:

  • Initial questionnaire for you to complete prior to our first session.
  • Month 1: Skype call to get to the nitty gritty of how we can help you (2 hours).
  • Months 2-6: Monthly Skype calls working on pre agreed topics and goals (1 hour each).
  • Email access between sessions plus telephone/ Skype at agreed times for urgent issues.
