Member Focus - White Dress Films

Now, normally we wouldn’t give you two new member focus posts in a week, but right now we are so excited at the number of businesses choosing to join us, we felt ‘why not’? Especially at a time of year when so many couples are choosing their wedding suppliers.

So, today we are very pleased to welcome White Dress Films. Over to you Richard…

How did it all start?

It seems so long ago it’s hard to remember, but in all honesty, I was asked to film a close friends wedding as I had a background in film and photography.

Do you have a favourite venue?

I love lots of different venues for all different reasons.

Places like South Farm are amazing, I loved filming at Stowe School the other year, Kings College Cambridge was also special, but small weddings with lots of thought either from a great planner or bride and amazing details can also be just as stunning.

Beach weddings or weddings abroad are also a big weakness.

How would clients describe you?

Friendly, professional, easy going.

Wedding suppliers you particularly admire?

Amanda Carter at Dottie Photography, her work is amazing and she also great to work with as she understands about working as a team!

How do you unwind?

I love being out with my kids, a walk on a Norfolk beach and a coffee in the Sand dunes.

What trends are you seeing for 2014/15?

I’m seeing less and less couples asking for discounts and people searching out great suppliers who understand about service.

What is your signature dish?

Chicken iTame from Wagamama

Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love work on?

Errr………. Pippa Middleton please…

What is your vice?

Coffee and not knowing when to turn my pc off !

Member Focus - Pretty, Please Events

26 February, 2014

This afternoon we are pleased to introduce you to one of our newer wedding planner members, Pretty Please Events. Over to you Holly…..

How did it all start?

Becoming a wedding planner has been a dream of mine since I was maybe as young as seven!

I have this vivid memory of planning one of the ‘pretend weddings’ kids do during lunchtimes finding a boy in class to play the vicar, exploring the area of the playground with the best light, making flowers out of paper. It was clearly a seed planted early!

I started planning fundraising events when I was in secondary school with friends, but it wasn’t until my final year of university that I made a conscious decision to make my dream a reality and start my own business. I offered my services for free for a few years, to get a portfolio together. Then when I had enough confidence in my work, I started Pretty, Please Events.

Do you have a favourite venue?

I absolutely love Searcy’s Gherkin! I’ve visited a lot when doing venue searches, but I haven’t been lucky enough to plan a wedding there yet. The top floor venue space is a completely glass dome and you get an amazing 360 degree view of the City. It’s a fantastically modern space and I can’t wait to find the right couple for it!

How would clients describe you?

I would say that we always go the extra mile, and I’m always pleased when I see that feedback from our couples reflects that! Flexible, friendly, passionate and creative are always words that come up again and again.

Wedding planner/s you admire?

I’ve always followed the work of Mark Niemierko with much admiration, though he is very much on the high end of the luxury market of weddings! All his events are put together with such style, class and creativity. I’m always looking for ways to capture that look, without the luxury price tag.

How do you unwind?

My favourite place in the whole world is the cinema. I studied film and television as an undergraduate, so it’s still my obsession. Doesn’t really matter what the film is just pass me the popcorn and let the lights go down! It’s also a great way to get style ideas for weddings…

What themes are you working on for 2014?

I’m looking at the Pantone Spring 2014 fashion colour report right now. Their “season of colourful equilibrium” is pairing soft pastels with vivid brights for a modern twist on Spring. It’s fun and daring for 2014 weddings!

What trends are you seeing?

Couples have been throwing out the rule book for years now and it’s only on the increase. Whether it’s the timing of the day, what food they will serve, or even what to wear it’s all changing.

Everything is customisable these days and weddings are getting to be no different. Themes are getting more and more common, from alpine ski to full on Alice in Wonderland, couples are putting their stamp on their day no two weddings will be the same.

What is your signature dish?

My husband is the chef in our household, so when I am allowed control of the kitchen I’ll often make a lasagne from scratch - I make a cracking Bechamel sauce!

Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love to design?

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds had an amazing wedding planned by Martha Stewart that I am obsessed with. It was on a gorgeous plantation in South Carolina where The Notebook was filmed, and really captured a rustic, laid back charm. That would be my dream wedding to design! But obviously Martha beat me to it.

Is the job as glamorous as you thought?

It’s probably not as glamorous as other people might think. I really love all the behind the scenes admin that goes into planning a wedding I’m a not-so-closeted spreadsheet lover. My love of wedding planning didn’t come from some glamorous idea of cake tasting and dress fluffing, I knew what I was getting into very early on!

What is your vice?

Chocolate! My husband travels to Switzerland a lot for work, so he obviously brings back a lot of Toblerone…

Business Support Hotline

21 February, 2014

Business Support Hotline @ £60 per hour

At this time of year many planners are starting to work on things they’ve not had to before: a new type of venue, a marquee reception, an outdoor ceremony, a supplier type they don’t know how to source confidently, to name but a few.

We appreciate that not everyone will require our full annual mentoring service which is why we launched this ‘business support hotline’ which is chargeable at £60 per hour. This will entitle you to spend time by phone/email obtaining the advice of one of the directors, or highly experienced members, on any areas of concern.

This service is available to those who have completed the UKAWP Business Practicalities or Step by Step training courses and to all UKAWP members.

If you are interested in booking an hour’s session, please contact Bernadette at training@ukawp.com or on 01376 561544.

Member Focus - Greens Catering

19 February, 2014

Today we introduce you to our newest Wedding Supplier Member Greens Catering.

How did it all start?

I knew I was going to be a chef from a young age when I worked at a hotel. For 20 years of my life I was the head chef of Touch of Taste, a well-established catering company owned by Concerto. When they decided to lose the Oxford Kitchens, I saw the opportunity to create his own dream, so bought the kitchens and started up Greens Catering.

Do you have a favourite venue?

Yes, Hedsor House. It is stunning with great catering facilities. The Hell Fire Caves too as it is not only a beautiful venue but also is incredibly challenging; and I like a challenge.

How would clients describe you?

Reliable, Flexible, Fun and Fresh.

Wedding suppliers you particularly admire?

Marquees and Pavillions, Pop-up Hotel.

How do you unwind?

After a busy day in the kitchen I like to enjoy a plate of cheese, a glass of wine and catching up with my terrible twins and Perfect Partner, Deb.

What trends are you seeing for 2014/15?

Within the food world, there will be lots of steaming and poaching in wine, coffee, beer and smoky liquids. There will also be a lot of farm to table flavours including rabbit and pigeon.

In terms of weddings Greens thinks there will be a lot of ‘back to nature’ vibes. Classy but Natural.

What is your signature dish?

Guinea Fowl marinated in orange and ginger… Rosti potatoes and fine beans (Just what you ate when you came to visit us) ‘oooh I did and it was gorgeous’.

Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love work on?

Jules Holland

What is your vice?

Eating all the wrong foods.
