Making the most of wedding fairs or events and maximising your coverage
28 May, 2014
If you are organising an open day, showcase or even exhibiting at a wedding fair, you will want to read on for some valuable advice from Nicola, Director of Propose PR . Over to you Nicola.
Top ten tips on making the most of a one-off occasion
Think ahead and build a communication strategy with a budget and timeline. You could start with a series of teaser campaigns, revealing more and more information as the event gets closer, or by giving away tickets as a prize to select media channels. The key to a good communications timeline is consistency, so make sure if you have an initial burst of activity that you keep it up and don’t forget to carry on the promotion.
- Don’t just use social media to shout about yourself. Engage with couples that are attending the event. Most events will have a Facebook page or hashtag, so be part of the conversation that brides are already having, so that definite attendees know who you are well in advance.
- Write a list of the communication channels available to you, such as social media, magazines, blogs and newspapers, your customer database and leaflets / direct mail and decide which channels target the right audience for your event.
- So you have your target audience in mind – now tell them what they want to hear. Aside from the obvious details, such as where, when, who, how much and so on, what makes your event truly unmissable? What are its unique selling points and how can you get them across in an original and exciting way?

- If you’re attending an event that’s external to your business, like a wedding fair, don’t miss the chance to promote your presence on your website, blog, email signature, database, e-newsletter, flyers and by word of mouth. Make sure brides can find you by mentioning your stand number and who will be representing you.
- Don’t just be ordinary. Think about how you can you make your stand or event extra special. You could run a competition, give away discounts for on-the-spot purchases, goodie bags for stand visitors or even arrange something interactive like on-stand entertainment, tastings, the facilities for brides to try on dresses or makeovers. Make sure that you shout about it too – the more you can engage potential customers in advance, the better.
- Stand-out styling can make all the difference to post-show publicity. Major press in attendance will be looking for the most striking and unique images to feature in their write ups, so be eye catching, original and let your styling say something about you and your business.
- Make the most of your money by using the fair or event’s own publicity channels. Most wedding fair organisers will have a marketing plan that all exhibitors can benefit from, for example including a write up of your business on their website, blog, show guide and social media channels. It also helps if other big-name businesses are exhibiting, and you are listed alongside them as it shows potential customers that you are in the same calibre as well-known suppliers.
- Make a lasting connection by swapping details. Don’t just let brides have a quick look at what’s on offer and pass you by, implement a way to give out your information, such as attaching your business card to free gifts. In turn, get brides to enter their details in a way that benefits them, via a prize draw, for example. This information is gold and should be stored onto your database and used for email marketing.
- Ask the event organiser if they would like you to do a workshop or take to the stage to do a talk or Q&A session with the brides. This is a great way of not only promoting yourself and your company but it’s also a chance for you to be known as an expert in your field. This gives you the unique opportunity to interact with brides on a whole new level, build trust and show them what you can do.

Member Focus - Pure White Wedding Company
26 May, 2014
I’m delighted to introduce you to Lisa Nicholas from the Pure White Wedding Company who is one of our associate members in Warwickshire.
How did it all start? Having worked as a PA for Managing Director in a busy marketing environment I thrived on the buzz of project management and deadlines. I wanted to combine the skills as a PA and Project Manager with my creative side and my world of Wedding Planning was started. I had always wanted to start my own business and the opportunity came and the right time in life.
Do you have a favourite venue? A tough one! I am very lucky to be associated with many lovely venues such as Fawsley Hall in Northamptonshire, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Ettington Park in Stratford… but my favorite would have to be Blenheim Palace in Woodstock. It is a beautiful venue and I am very lucky to be working with the Palace for a wedding in September.
How would clients describe you? Very organised, very approachable and very chatty! I love to hear about a clients plans and if I can make it happen it will happen!
Wedding planner/s you admire? I really admire Sarah Haywood – I think she has inspired so many wedding planners and given them an insight into the world of planning through her “Wedding Bible” – she also comes across as a thoroughly lovely person too and very genuine.
How do you unwind? I have 3 boys so the word “unwind” does not really exist in my house! I do love to run – I have completed a couple of 10K runs and will be training for a half marathon soon!
What themes are you working on for 2014/15? There are no specific themes as such – but the personalisation of a clients wedding is in each wedding I do. Elements such as a photograph of a Grandparent or a ring are incorporated into the day. I have a client whom have cats and these will be the cake toppers. I think it is important to follow your heart and include anything that means something to you.
What trends are you seeing? The 1920s/1930’s and Vintage are here to stay. I love the 1960’s boho style coming through (brides wearing their mums wedding dresses are fabulous). Blush Pink is a gorgeous colour and I am really pleased it is becoming more popular. I love illusion and plunging backs – and two piece separates are appearing too. I think food is becoming more personalised and rather than sticking with a buffet menu couples are incorporating their own likes into the menus and thinking outside the box.
What is your signature dish? I make amazing meatballs apparently! And I do a mean Shepherds Pie…
Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love to design? i would make myself available for George Clooneys wedding - a huge budget in a gorgeous Italian location surrounded by A listers and the most amazing food and wine ! what more could you ask for!
Is the job as glamorous as you thought? Hard work yes, unsociable hours yes, glamorous no! but do I enjoy it – yes I love my job as a Wedding Planner.
What is your vice? Bubbles! Champagne, Prosecco…. And a tall glass!
Showcase Wedding - Bellissimo Weddings
23 May, 2014
I’m delighted to share with you today a civil partnership organised by the lovely Melanie from Bellissimo Weddings who is also one of our Regional Ambassadors.
Roy and Pieter’s Civil Partnership was our first Civil Partnership instruction so it was really exciting for us and reassuring to know our large portfolio of weddings didn’t put them off using us.
Roy and Pieter are a very stylish professional couple who didn’t have time to plan their Civil Partnership but also had no idea where to start! We quickly found them the perfect venue, the beautiful eco-friendly Greenhouse Hotel in Bournemouth.
Every element was very design led and stylish and had to be just perfect. Roy and Pieter wanted an Art Deco, Jazz feel to the day, bringing in South African elements (Pieter is from South Africa), their fondness of lilac and their love of cocktails!
We started by creating a mood board and took the styling ideas from there to build the over all look of the day and the finer details. As well as sourcing all their suppliers, we also created a dessert table for Roy and Pieter as they didn’t want a traditional wedding cake.
At 6pm after the wedding breakfast guests returned to their rooms and changed into Black Tie for the evening. On returning to the party guests enjoyed a cocktail hour followed by dancing the night away to fantastic jazz music. All the guests loved this and we would definitely recommend this to couples in the future- it was great fun for the guests and allowed Roy and Pieter a little time alone during the break.
The details and extra touches in this day really made it extra special and we loved being able to realise Roy and Pieter’s ideas and high standards.

Thinking about hiring a wedding planner?
21 May, 2014
Debating about whether to hire a wedding planner? Here are some fab reasons to get you started.
Time – they can save you valuable time, taking on the not so enjoyable aspects of planning, leaving you with the fun parts.
Knowledge - they know what’s hot and new in the wedding world because suppliers of new products and services often come to wedding planners to launch their products.
Value - they know what’s good value and we often obtain discounts for our clients. Weddings are our business and we know what is overpriced and what the better value alternatives are, ensuring that your budget goes as far as possible.
Experience - they can match our tried and trusted suppliers to your exact needs; independent planners have time to get to know their small client base well and spend a lot of time accurately matching with tried and trusted wedding suppliers to ensure absolute perfection.
Advice - they give sound, non emotional advice for family dilemmas and etiquette queries. A wedding is such an emotional occasion for everyone involved that an outside professional opinion is often of great value.
Reduce Stress - they help reduce the stress associated with planning a wedding by knowing realistic timelines for all wedding tasks.
Detail - they offer meticulous attention to detail – wedding planners want your wedding to look ‘wow’ and ensure that the smallest detail you envisage is not overlooked.
Your wedding - they do not take over or implement our ideas; it’s your wedding always. It is our job to take your vision, and implement it, but at every step you are approving items; a good planner’s service can be amended to suit the needs of individual clients.
To find a wedding planner in your area pop on over to our directory, remember all our members are insured and have been vetted.
