Business Support Hotline

31 May, 2013

We know wedding season is well underway and wedding planners, particularly those new to the business, may well come up against a variety of issues as they finalise plans for clients’ big days.

Whereas some planners decide to undertake our year long full mentoring programme, others just need some short, sharp advice and a quick sounding board for specific issues.

If this is you, consider our Business Support Hotline which costs just £60 per hour for tailored telephone and/ or email advice.

This service is available to those who have completed the UKAWP Business Practicalities or Step By Step training courses as well as all UKAWP members.

You can book and pay for a session here or contact info@ukawp.com if you have queries.

Member Focus - The Bespoke Wedding Company

29 May, 2013

Today we introduce you to Kelly Chandler, previous founder/ director of the UKAWP and lifetime Supreme Member. Kelly runs The Bespoke Wedding Company. Over to you Kelly…

KELLY CHANDLER 17

Pippa Mackenzie Photography

How did it all start?

I was travelling the world working as a logistics project manager for an agency in the conference and incentive travel market. It was all good fun but I missed being away from my new husband and was looking to find something which allowed me to work in a similar market where attention to detail is key but on a more personal and local level. At the same time a great friend had been made redundant was considering her options; she came to me with the idea and before I knew it we were ploughing ahead and had created The Bespoke Wedding Company.

Do you have a favourite venue?

That’s a really hard question as there are so many beauties I’ve been privileged to work in but for me it’s the people who work there who make the venue. I can name on one hand the venues who have the same dedicated staff as they had 5 or 10 years ago when I started out; they are real gems and always go the extra mile for my clients which means the world to me. Take a bow: Highclere Castle, Syon House and The Dairy @Waddesdon Manor.

How would clients describe you?

Reliable, professional, detail-oriented, like a ‘dog with a bone’ when they want to achieve something. I’d like to think they would say fun and friendly too – I’ve kept in touch with a huge number of past clients long after their wedding as a friend which is the best testimonial I guess. And I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with various sets of friends who’ve recommended me to the next friends marrying!

Wedding planner/s you admire?

Ooh, that’s a tricky one as I know so many, personally largely through my work with UKAWP. I look for inspiration to the likes of Sasha Souza and Mindy Weiss in the US and will always have a soft spot for Siobhan Craven-Robins who is one of the original and finest UK wedding planners alongside Sarah Haywood, who is an inspirational planner and businesswoman.

How do you unwind?

It’s got to be a glass of wine to the rescue sometimes – New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is my tipple of choice. And then if there is more time, the walking boots are donned and I love getting out into the countryside for fresh air and scenery.

What themes are you working on for 2013/14?

A real variety but one very romantic English country garden wedding and then one wedding with multiple themes including a chic all-white reception area and a smoky, moody, with a little bit of glitz, cocktail bar and nightclub.

What trends are you seeing?

I’m seeing couples being ever more focused on their priorities and doing away with convention. The visual memoirs of the day are very important and more money is being invested in film and photo. I’m seeing more architectural flowers and installations in a room as well as or instead of more usual bloom-filled table centres. I’m seeing an attitude of less is more, with a focus on less items but with a far greater quality on those items which are chosen.

What is your signature dish?

Hmm, well I recently made a yummy lamb tagine and pomegranate couscous which went down a storm and my chocolate cake with the help of The Primrose Bakery book was a hit of late too.

Whose celebrity wedding (dead or alive) would you love to design?

I am a big fan of Kristin Scott Thomas and would love to plan a splendid celebration for her. She is the epitomy of elegance, sophistication and class to me and I just love her work and personal style. Amazing that she manages to dazzle in both English and French, that’s just pure talent. I’m sure any celebration would be understated yet luxurious and gorgeous, right up my street.

Is the job as glamorous as you thought?

I’ve never had expectations of glamour with event planning. From my first ever experience on-site on a corporate job where I lost half a stone in a week as I was always waiting for the correct meal time, I learnt that you work long and hard but the rewards are in being part of it and seeing all your efforts pay off. Happy faces all round are very rewarding and I almost always shed a quiet tear during every wedding ceremony.

What is your vice?

Cadburys Mini Eggs, Champagne and my iPhone.

Business Mentoring for Wedding Planners

27 May, 2013

The UKAWP Mentoring Scheme gets excellent feedback from those who have been a part of it.

It is available to anyone who has completed the Business Practicalities course: this way we know that you have covered the basics and we will not simply repeat the course.

You will be allocated one of the two Directors or a very senior, and knowledgeable, Member as your Mentor for a year, during which you will have three face to face meetings of up to two hours, tailored specifically to your Company and your individual needs, along with reasonable email and telephone support throughout the year.

You do not need to be a UKAWP Member to take advantage of this service and you may begin before or after launch.

The service costs £500 for the year, however we offer a 10% discount to those signing up within 6 months of attending either the Business Practicalities or Step By Step training course.

If you have any queries about the Mentoring Scheme please contact Bernadette Chapman at training@ukawp.com or on 01376 561544.

The Big Wedding

24 May, 2013

We recently had the opportunity to see a preview of ‘The Big Wedding‘ which comes out next week. Synopsis and trailer below…

The Big Wedding - Synopsis

With an all-star cast led by Robert DeNiro (Meet the Fockers, Analyze That), Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses), Diane Keaton (Morning Glory, Annie Hall), Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia) and Topher Grace (In Good Company), with Susan Sarandon (Shall We Dance) and Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting), THE BIG WEDDING is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco.

To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future - and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process.

Trailer

Did we think it was the best film ever? Not really. Did we laugh out loud and would we happily watch it again? Yes, absolutely. It is a great romp of a film, made all the funnier by lots of our favourite actors making fabulous fools of themselves over the thing we and our members spend our time planning and designing - namely, a wedding.

Many of us work with families who work hard to get along in order that their children have wonderful wedding days, but I hope none of us ever has to deal with quite so much craziness.

Wedding Showcase - Hollywood Glamour

22 May, 2013

Today we wanted to showcase this gorgeously glamorous wedding, planned by Nikki of I Do Designer Weddings. Over to you Nikki…

We LOVED working to create this amazing Hollywood Glamour themed wedding for our clients Sarah & Glen.

We were hired as soon as they got engaged; always the best time for a wedding planner to be instructed as it allows us to make the most impact on a wedding.

We sourced every single supplier, suggested and implemented the design, planned all of the intrinsic details, and were there to run the day from the set up right through to putting the guests in taxis to send them home. Sarah & Glen made the whole wedding planning process fun and were a great couple to work with.

They shared a massive love of movies and so we worked to create a romantic Hollywood themed day. We wanted the glamour of a bygone era with a modern twist. Black and white with hints of red was chosen as the colour palette. Our design included a red carpet, movie star themed table names, baroque frames as favours and we even had their names added to our very own ‘walk of fame’ bar. There was so much detail at this wedding that it would be impossible to show you everything.

The guests were amazed by all of the little details. At the end of the night a superb fireworks display concluded what will remain one of our firm favourite weddings.
